"Privacy" Glasses Actually for the Most Vain, Awful People [Sunglasses]

The joke with these glasses is that they're supposed to mimic the black censorship bars cast over the faces of celebs, criminals, and others with concealed identities. Avoid the paparazzi! But the real joke's that these are for the attention-starved. More »

Google Voice Search learns Latin American Spanish, Indonesian, and Malaysian

google voice search
Google Voice Search has just introduced localizations for Latin America, Indonesia and Malaysia, enabling native language search for hundreds of millions of users.

Google's official blog post offers some interesting insights into the process of collecting and analyzing the speech data needed to expand support. Thousands of hours were spent gathering voice samples and choosing key regional accents to analyze, and International Program Manager Linne Ha is clearly very appreciative of the Google users who helped the company complete the expansion. Without an enthusiastic base of users to lend a hand, Google Voice Search's polyglot powers would have been nearly impossible to deliver.

Advent's Vega tablet gets a little sweeter with the addition of Android 3.0 (video)

There's plenty of Android tablets out there, but you could certainly do a lot worse than the Advent Vega with its Tegra 2 innards and £199 ($326) asking price. You may take issue with its outdated OS, but thankfully a couple of hackers have replaced the Vega's antiquated Android 2.2 with a heaping helping of Honeycomb. It's currently an alpha release, so while widgets and apps are working well, camera capabilities, screen rotation, web-surfing on WiFi, and most everything else is currently off limits. There's still plenty of work to be done, but seeing Advent's slate running buttery smooth Android 3.0 with aplomb (even if unofficially) makes us think it's a better bargain than ever before. Check out how the Vega looks sporting its slick new threads in the video after the break.

HTC Tablet?s Stylus to Cost a Whopping 80 Bucks

HTC wants its Android tablet to stand out from the myriad others introduced this year, offering a stylus pen to complement its new hardware. But differentiation might prove too pricey for customers. Microsoft's Trying to Buy Skype [Microsoft]

At $8.5 billion (or $7-$8 billion), it'd be Microsoft's hugest acquisition ever. Supposedly, the deal's going to be announced tomorrow. I can think of 100 reasons this could work, and like 101 reasons it's a terrible idea. [Dealbook, WSJ, Boomtown] More »

Novel Concepts' ThinSink claims title of world's thinnest air-cooled heat sink

Heat sinks may not ordinarily be the most exciting sort of component -- but the world's thinnest air-cooled heat sink? That's... something. According to the folks at Novel Concepts, their new credit card-sized, 0.75mm thick ThinSink has now laid claim to that title, and it may soon lead to thinner tablets, laptops and monitors. What's more, despite its small size, the company claims that the ThinSink still has a cooling efficiency "25 times greater than today's best microprocessor heat sinks," and it consumes just 0.031 watts of electricity when equipped with a fan spinning at 6,000 RPM. Those interested in an evaluation unit will have to fork over a hefty $750, but the company promises it will be cheaper in larger quantities, and notes that it could also easily be stamped or molded from metal or plastic, as it only consists of two thin flat parts in addition to the motor.

Zen Coding high-speed HTML shorthand plug-in updated

zencoding
Zen Coding made quite a splash when we first covered it almost a year ago. For those who aren't familiar, Zen is a fantastic form of shorthand for quickly hand-coding HTML. And today, a new version is out!

Here are some of the goodies version 0.7 brings to the party:

  • Text nodes: Writing something like a[href=/]{Click here} now works, and puts "Click here" within the link.
  • New actions added: Increment/decrement number under cursor, evaluate math expressions, and more.
  • Wrap with Abbreviation was upgraded.
There are several other improvements but they're all rather technical. If you use Zen Coding (or are intrigued by the concept) go ahead and read the release notes for this new version.

Zen Coding has official implementations for a ton of editors, including TextMate, Apatana, Coda, E2, Komodo, Notepad++, PSPad, and more. It also has unofficial builds for Vim, UltraEdit, Visual Studio and more.

If you want to play with Zen Coding without installing it, you can use the online demo to see some of its magic in action.
