Watch Squirrel Faces Pucker When They Bite Into Your Vinegar-Spiked Jack-O-Lanterns [How To]

You worked damn hard on your Jack-O-Lantern and nobody's going to make you move it until that pumpkin is a pile of Thanksgiving mush—especially not some infernal squirrel who's nibbling it for winter sustenance. More »

Android Kids App: Scott's Submarine

Youtube link for mobile viewing

Here's a fun little Android kids app that takes things under the sea. Scott's Submarine is an interactive book that tells the story of two children, Scott and Aiko, and Scott's cat, Jazz, and their underwater adventures.

Each page has animation on it, but no so much that it's distracting. Every few pages you search for items, which gets a little more difficult as you work your way thorugh the story. And there are two levels of reading -- 2- to 3-year-olds, and 4 and up. The former uses smaller words for younger children, and the latter uses a more advanced vocabulary and longer sentences. The reader's accent could be a small issue for some children, however.

The 37-page story also got four languages -- English, French, Spanish and Japanese -- and costs $2.99. We've got download links after the break.

Zen Coding high-speed HTML shorthand plug-in updated

zencoding
Zen Coding made quite a splash when we first covered it almost a year ago. For those who aren't familiar, Zen is a fantastic form of shorthand for quickly hand-coding HTML. And today, a new version is out!

Here are some of the goodies version 0.7 brings to the party:

  • Text nodes: Writing something like a[href=/]{Click here} now works, and puts "Click here" within the link.
  • New actions added: Increment/decrement number under cursor, evaluate math expressions, and more.
  • Wrap with Abbreviation was upgraded.
There are several other improvements but they're all rather technical. If you use Zen Coding (or are intrigued by the concept) go ahead and read the release notes for this new version.

Zen Coding has official implementations for a ton of editors, including TextMate, Apatana, Coda, E2, Komodo, Notepad++, PSPad, and more. It also has unofficial builds for Vim, UltraEdit, Visual Studio and more.

If you want to play with Zen Coding without installing it, you can use the online demo to see some of its magic in action.

Nokia Trials Free Wi-Fi in London

If you live in London, and own a portable device with Wi-Fi, then today is your lucky day. Nokia has just launched a trial service offering free Wi-Fi in Central London. Better yet — if it works, then the Finnish company will turn it into a full (and still free) service. The trial will be concentrated [...]

Sounfreaq's Sound Stack Bluetooth speaker sports dual subwoofers, $400 pricetag

Sounfreaq doesn't release speaker systems often, but it's safe to expect something spectacularly sexy when it does. Such is exactly the case with its latest audiophile-aimed creation, the Sound Stack wireless speaker. The company is toting this $400 Bluetooth-enabled HiFi rig as a "2.2" speaker system, thanks to its DubSub design -- a duo of active subwoofers pump out lowend in an effort to complement its two other "full-range" drivers. Soundfreaq's also packed this puppy with its UQ3 processing to keep the soundstage wide despite the unit's size. Better yet, downloading a free Remote App (available on Android and iOS) unlocks the system's FM radio -- perfect for when you're feeling nostalgic. If that wasn't enough, the Sound Stack's also loaded with an iThing dock and a USB input, both of which can be used to re-juice your devices while streaming. If your Gadget Acquisition Syndrome is already kicking in, fret not, the Sound Stack is available for purchase now. You'll find more details past the break.

EA Wants To Take On Zynga, But Does This Just Mean ?More Madden??

EA-LogoAfter churning out a parade of sequels to all of their flagship games, has EA finally learned its lesson? Last month, EA CEO John Riccitiello said that his company is taking dead aim at Zynga, implying that perhaps the company understands what's at stake, and is determined to be just as much of a player in digital games as it has been on consoles. EA's acquisition of PopCap Games, the makers of Plants Vs Zombies and Bejeweled, was a great way to convince investors (and fans) that it's serious about making a play into online and social games. Granted, EA paid upwards of $1.3 billion for PopCap (with a market cap of right around $8 billion!), but it succeeded in snatching the casual game maker from the eager claws of Zynga, which made a $1 billion offer for the game developer.

Apple Buys Company to Add Killer 3D to Its Maps [Video]

For the past few years, Apple has been hammering away at building its own mapping platform to shake the yoke of Google Maps. It just took another step toward assembling its cartographic Frankenstein monster by buying up C3 Technologies, which assembles hyper-realistic 3D maps and integrates them with more traditional 2D maps and photos.
