T-Mobile's myTouch 4G Slide shows off its camera chops (video)

We've known since its recent announcement that T-Mobile's myTouch 4G Slide will be a mobile photographer's delight and now we get to see the camera UI in action on video. As a quick reminder, the carrier's upcoming Gingerbread smartphone is made by HTC and features Sense 3.0, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, a 3.7-inch WVGA Super LCD display, HSPA+ connectivity on the AWS spectrum, and a trick 8 megapixel shooter. The f2.2 wide-angle lens is combined with a low-light capable sensor and a dual-LED flash, but it's the camera software that really shines. Like on the Sensation, you'll find support for 1080p HD video recording, but the myTouch 4G Slide adds multiple scenes, zero shutter lag technology, continuous autofocus, HDR stills capture, plus panorama and burst modes, along with a dedicated two-stage shutter key. While we doubt it will dethrone Nokia's N8 in term of raw picture quality, we're looking forward to putting HTC's latest feature-packed shooter through its paces when the handset debuts this month for $199 on contract.

Video Games Improve Marijuana Performance 43% [Half Baked]

There aren't many things that marijuana users say weed can't make better. Take this guy I used to know. His name was Mike. Every once in a while we'd hang out with a few other guys and play ridiculous amounts of Halo 2. Occasionally Mike would light up during our fragfests. More »

Toshiba unveils new CMOS sensor, flaunts smaller pixels

Hoping your next smartphone will have more megapixels while being even thinner than the last? Us too, but we're not known to skimp on image quality -- an unfortunate conundrum of squishing more pixels into a tighter space. Enter Toshiba's new CMOS sensor, advancing on both fronts, with 8 megapixels and what the firm reckons is the smallest pixel size in the industry at 1.12 micrometers. Also present is backside illumination, helping maximize photon accrual -- which should make a certain Steve oh-so proud. Currently being sampled, the teensy gizmo plans to go into mass production later this year. Interested? Peep the full release after the break.

Wooden iPhone/iPad Speakers

The iBamboo speaker is now officially funded over at Kickstarter, but in the event a hunk of bamboo in your living room clashes with your decor, head on over to etsy.com.  The seller YellowGlueBlues has a shop full of wooden speakers with the similar concept of amplifying the iPhone’s speaker through a hollow wooden base. This Amplifier Is Worth More Than Its Weight in Gold [Audiophile]

Audia Strumento's GoldAmp A100 weighs only 800 grams. 800g of gold at today's prices would cost around $39,200. Its MSRP however, will be between $48,622-$51,490. Sure it's expensive but this is what audiophiles get wet dreams about. More »

Pioneer's SE-CL331 earbuds are just begging to be washed

The first-ever earbuds designed to be drenched they aren't, but they just might be one of the first to actually be "washable." Sure enough, Pioneer's new SE-CL331 headphones ($59.99) -- available in white, pink and bright blue hues -- can reportedly be "soaked and washed after every sports session without damaging sensitive electronic equipment." Furthermore, they boast a newfangled ear holder that keeps 'em in place while your body's in motion, and there's a two-layer mesh and rubber ring that'll prevent water from seeping in while submerged up to one meter of goop. The built-in 9mm drivers probably won't live up to Westone standards, but then again, you can't exactly take your ES5s into the kiddie pool

Don?t Call It A PivotPlz: PicPlz Spun Off As Mixed Media Labs Prepares Their Next Product

When Mixed Media Labs raised a $5 million round last November, it raised quite a few eyebrows. After all, the money came from Andreessen Horowitz, the VC firm which had backed Instagram. To be fair, they backed Instagram when it was still known as Burbn ? before it became what is now a massively popular mobile photo-sharing app. Still, there's no question that Mixed Media Labs' PicPlz product was a direct competitor. And Andreessen Horowitz sided with them, while Instagram found other investors. But as Sarah noted at the time, Andreessen's bet wasn't so much against Instagram, as it was a bet on Mixed Media Lab founder Dalton Caldwell. Caldwell, who had previously founded imeem, was said to have a broad vision for a company beyond photo-sharing. PicPlz was just the first product to leverage what they were creating. And while it has achieved moderate success, it has not seen the success Instagram has in terms of users. And now Mixed Media Labs has moved on to their next product, we've learned.

The Five Best Things About OS X Lion

If all goes according to rumored plan, OS X Lion should hit stores by July 14 alongside new hardware to run the new OS. I've played with the Gold Master over the weekend and I'm pleased to report it is stable and a unique version of OS X, more complete than other, iterative updates like Snow Leopard. I won't bore you with all the new stuff under the hood but let's look at a few of the cool new features MacLovers will soon be using on a daily basis.

Verizon: unlimited 3G customers can upgrade to 4G, keep data pack and grab $30 tethering

Good Great news for those who managed to snag one of Verizon Wireless' unlimited data plans before they took off into the night earlier this week: if you're rocking a 3G smartphone, you can eventually upgrade to an LTE handset, keep the unlimited plan, and have access to a $30 / month 4G tethering plan. That's according to VZW's official Support account on Twitter, and it's decidedly lovely news for those who were concerned that they'd be locked into EV-DO forever. So, anyone had any luck taking Big Red up on its offer?
