Hard Graft Back Up Case for iPad 2

The Smart Cover for iPad 2 is a wonderful screen cover and stand, but it leaves the back of your expensive device exposed.  There are a variety of skins, cases, and covers available for iPad 2, but not all of them work with the Smart Cover.  Hard Graft is introducing their new Back Up Case [...]

Jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 on OS X or Windows with PwnageTool or Sn0wbreeze

iOS 4.3.1 jailbreakA jailbreak of iOS 4.3.1 is now possible with both PwnageTool on Mac, and Sn0wbreeze on Windows. RedmondPie -- who else? -- has some handy guides that you can follow for all iOS 4.3.1 devices on Windows, for iPhone 4 on OS X, iPad 1 on OS X, iPhone 3GS on OS X, and iPod touch 4G and 3G on OS X.

All iOS 4.3.1 jailbreaks are still tethered, meaning you'll have to jailbreak your device after every reboot. An untethered jailbreak is slated for release sometime in the next week -- but 4.3 was meant to have an untether, too, and that never emerged.

Maybe Apple's updated security mechanisms will finally keep hackers at bay!

New software uses facial recognition to defend against prying eyes

Having the right programs and hardware to keep the information on your display safe from prying eyes is never a bad idea, and new software from Oculis Labs offers a very interesting take on how to do just that. It's called PrivateEye, and it utilizes facial recognition to automatically pixelate the contents of your display when you look away.

If you step away from your system and someone else decides to sit down and poke around, PrivateEye will present a confusing jumble of garbled text. It'll even notify you if someone tries to peek over your shoulder -- and display a picture of your peeping Tom, throw up an alert, or sound an alarm.

Check out the video embed after the break, and share your thoughts in the comments!

Sneaky Subs Are Going Wakeless Thanks to Underwater Cloaking [Science]

If The Hunt for Red October taught us anything (besides the fact that Sean Connery makes for a horrible Russian) it's that submarines can be tracked by the sounds they make moving through the water. Well, not for much longer. More »

Book Of 'Roadside Prostitutes' Made Entirely With Google Street View [Sex]

Mishka Henner went online to find out where men sought prostitutes, and then he visited — on Google Street View. The result is No Man's Land, a self-published book of photography, showing women, mostly alone and often scantily clad, in Spain, Italy, and Romania. More »

OverDrive Media Console App for iPad Review

I?ve been a fan of ebooks for many years, starting with Peanut Press books on my Handspring Visor Deluxe back around 1999.   After writing code for 9 hours/day for many years, you can imagine my wrists were shot, and I loved ebooks because they weren?t as heavy and hard to hold as a physical book.  [...]

Trojan asteroid caught circling Earth, the Greeks deny involvement

Hide your kids, hide your wife, there's an asteroid circling Earth's orbit and we're all gonna... be just fine? Yeah, no need to stock up those '60s fallout shelters folks, this approximately 1,000 feet wide space rock is sitting pretty and safe in one of our Lagrange points. The so-called Trojan asteroid, known as 2010 TK7, was uncovered 50 million miles away by the infrared eyes of NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) telescope, and is the first of its kind to be discovered near our humble planet. Typically, these near-Earth objects (NEOs) hide in the sun's glare, but this satellite's unusual circuit around our world helped WISE and the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope confirm its existence. The finding has our best and brightest giddy with the hope similar NEOs "could make excellent candidates for future robotic or human exploration." Unfortunately, our new planetoid friend's too-high, too-low path doesn't quite cut the space mission mustard. No matter, 2010 TK7 still gets to call "First!"

MacBook Air's Thunderbolt Port Is Weak Sauce (Compared to Other Macs) [Apple]

The brand new MacBook Airs are pretty flipping sweet, we all know that. But what we didn't know was that the Thunderbolt in the MacBook Air was gimped—it's smaller and less powerful than its big brother Macs. More »

Bing begins roll out of HTML5-enhanced search interface

Bing transitions
Bing's new HTML5-and-CSS3-enhanced search interface, which was first demonstrated back in September 2010 to showcase the power of IE9, has started to roll out.

The most notable addition to the new interface is is smooth page transitions -- the fade in and out -- and navigation tabs (maps, images, videos, etc.) now persistently float at the top of the page. WinRumors is also reporting that a feature reminiscent of Google Instant search is being added to Bing, with page elements smoothly transitioning in and out as you type in your search query.

If you want to try out the new Bing UI, your best bet is to set your locale to United States - English and pray that you're part of the initial roll out. Alternatively, just wait a few days until MIX 2011, Microsoft's Web developer conference, which is when the new Bing UI should be officially launched.
